Plan for UWB future/Legislative Update
Linda distributed the 2004 Washington State Legislative Session Summary, prepared by Randy Hodgins, Director of the UW Office of State Relations to EC. This summary, presented to the UW Board of Regents and the Committee on Academic and Student Affairs has information on issues that directly impact UWB. The UW Bothell Study outlines a budget proviso that directs the UW to submit a plan to phase in lower-division courses at UWB. This plan shall be submitted to the higher education and fiscal committees of the legislature by December 15, 2004. Some issues addressed by the plan:
The EC discussion focused on how best to bring the faculty voice to the table in crafting the plan to the legislature and maintaining strong faculty input at every stage in planning for UWB's future. Where we stand now in this process influences where we are going, Chancellor Buck has given a presentation to the Provost staff on our position and values, the Chancellor's Cabinet has met on this issue as well as the Institutional Planning and Effectiveness Committee and Interim Vice Chancellor Jane Decker has asked that the faculty organize a meeting to structure and solidify our principles and vision. Three documents will be generated by December 2004. These are:
Jack Meszaros, representative on the Tri-Campus Task Force shared information with the EC on the perspective that the Task Force holds for this planning process and outcome. She stated that this presents UWB with the opportunity to move with one voice and strategize how we want this campus to evolve. Faculty and the administration at UWB need to create the four year university that we envision. Our consultation begins with UWB academic programs and faculty and will incorporate UWS, WSU, UWT, Community Colleges, the community, and consultants to produce a clearly defined plan to get us where we want to go. We will look at campuses across the nation to evaluate what works and what doesn't, but the final decision on a system to phase in upper and lower-division education will be made with strong faculty guidance, holding onto the values and the identity that UWB has established.
Action item:
Linda will send out an email to encourage faculty to provide input to their EC representative on strategic planning for UWB's future.
Action item:
Jack will send out the Values and Future Document to the EC, a statement of key values derived from a faculty forum last year.
Action item:
Sandeep will organize a Strategy Session on May 7 with the GFO, the Tri-Campus Task Force and the new Vice Chancellor, Tom Bellamy with the following outcomes:
EC representatives will gather input, feedback and information from their programs to bring to the Strategy Session.
