Executive Council Meeting: 02/17/2004

Present: Patricia Kelley, Andrea Kovalesky, Sandeep Krishnamurthy, Mike Stiber, Jane Van Galen, Barbara Van Sant and Linda Watts

Linda started the meeting with a few general announcements.

EC representatives might remind their programs of the call for nominations for the following internal awards at UWB:

The GFO will seek to determine committee membership for 2004-2005 during Spring Quarter. Elections for GFO Chair, GFO Vice Chair and Faculty Council will take place in May 2004.

Action item: Barbara will provide a list of the GFO committee membership and the terms of office at the March 2 EC meeting.

CSS has requested that the EC review the CSS Promotion and Tenure Guidelines document for comment and input. The EC will review the draft document at the March 2 meeting.

Continued Discussion: Campus Issues

The EC discussed issues of shared governance in response to the proposed legislation to make UWB a four year institution and the designation of the campus as a research institution. The EC is committed to promoting a strong faculty voice and maintaining a role in the consultation process to advise the Chancellor.

Action item: Jane will draft a document/letter that will reflect the faculty views and state faculty voice in the matter.

Report back: EC's Working Group on Faculty Resources/Opportunities

Andrea submitted the revised Working Document related to Faculty Salary Issues, DRAFT #4 to the EC for comment and input. The EC suggested some changes to ensure that there is procedural consistency across programs on matters of faculty resources and opportunities. The document, once approved by the EC will be forwarded to Faculty Affairs.

Action item: Andrea will draft a new document with the editorial changes for EC approval.

Discussion on Distance Learning at UWB

There are current CSS courses at UWB being offered on a temporary basis as Distance Learning courses. CSS would like to get feedback from the EC and the programs on adopting a policy on Distance Learning at UWB. Program representatives will confer with their colleagues in anticipation of EC's next discussion of this topic on March 2.
