Executive Council Meeting: 02/03/2004

February 3, 2004, 8:30 am., UW1 211B

Present: Colin Danby, Patricia Kelley, Andrea Kovalesky, Sandeep Krishnamurthy, Mike Stiber, Jane Van Galen, Barbara Van Sant and Linda Watts

EC minutes of January 6, 2004 and January 20, 2004 were approved unanimously.

Update on Campus issues

Linda opened discussion on current campus issues with the EC to share information and open communication on two legislative initiatives proposed which would impact UWB. Issues discussed:

• The importance of shared governance in decision making at UWB
• Making sure the faculty voice is heard on strategic planning for the growth of this institution
• The State's resolve to increase baccalaureate degrees means that UWB must initiate campus conversations about becoming a 4 year institution
• The implications for these challenges affect faculty directly through planning for new programs, faculty recruitment, admission policies and overall strategic planning.
• A proactive stance is needed to ensure the faculty voice remains strong.

Motion: The EC leadership will disseminate public information that is considered vital to the faculty for communication on important issues. The motion carried unanimously.

A Tri-campus Task Force has been formed. Linda, council member on the Faculty Council on Tri-Campus Policy and Jack Meszaros, UW Senator are UWB representatives on this steering committee. This committee is acting as fact finders to identify potential models for UW's future operations/policy mechanisms/governance as a three-campus university.

Report on EC's working group on faculty salaries

Andrea and Jane presented the EC with a draft of a Working Document related to Faculty Salary Issues. A recommendation for the GFO EC to appoint a task force or commission the Faculty Affairs Committee to establish a task force to work on faculty salary inequities across programs and campuses was proposed. Following discussion of the document, it was agreed that a revised document would come before EC at the next meeting.
