Discussion of data from faculty survey
Sandeep reported to the EC the preliminary results of the data from the faculty survey. It seems that the faculty is satisfied with support for teaching and dissatisfied with support for research. Also, it is clear that there is a lot of heterogenity in the response to the question about where UWB is headed.
The survey feedback will help chart the course for the strategic plan and prioritizing goals. Teaching assistants, research assistants and course release (down from the 5 - 6 classes) were suggested as some solutions to provide the time the faculty was asking for. Two issues the faculty would like to be considered are salary and summer funding for research.
Taylor Webb posed the question, how will the data and qualitative information be used? He was concerned that summarizing the data in certain ways may provide greater voice to larger programs. Sandeep sees the survey data as guiding the strategic plan and setting strategic priorities for the faculty and institution. He will send a report out to the faculty through email, follow-up with feedback from each program through departmental meetings, and then work with Jane Decker to analyze the information and develop a plan. The results will inform the discussion around campus and guide us as we forge ahead. The EC and GFO can form focus groups to get into greater depth into some of the issues.
Planning for Fred Campbell's Visit
Fred Campbell will be here on April 2, 2003 for a forum on Tri-Campus relations. The discussion will focus on the nature of relations between UWB, UWT and UWS and also on our relationship with the Faculty Senate. Fred Campbell, former head of Undergrad Education at Seattle, was involved in the planning in the early stages of UWB. He is coming here to listen to our dreams. He wants to learn about where we are going and how we want to get there. This will be another avenue of communication with the President and Provost. This meeting will frame the beginning of strategic planning for UWB.
