The primary focus of the Mar. 5 Executive Council meeting was "strategic planning." Sandeep Krishnamurthy distributed a "talking points" paper (attached). He explained that he had had several conversations with various faculty including Linda Watts, who first broached the idea of a strategic plan at an earlier EC meeting, and the Academic Directors. The "talking points" paper served as focus for the EC discussion.
Sandeep conveyed that the Academic Directors were unanimously in favor of "strategic planning" and volunteered their assistance.
While the EC recognized the valuable information and hard work encompassed in various works such as the mission statement, vision statement, and strategic positioning document, the general consensus was that we needed a strategic plan to move mission/vision/strategic positioning documents to actions at the programmatic level.
The EC discussed how long a strategic plan should be (i.e. how many years' worth), who to involve in the development, how to gather feedback, where to go to get information, what sorts of forums would be needed, what the timeline should be for the process of developing the strategic plan.
By the next EC meeting in April, we hope to have the members of a strategic planning committee identified. It will be their charge to decide upon the specific process of developing the strategic plan, collect information, and, with considerable input from stakeholders, to develop the plan.
The EC also discussed when and how to inform the Chancellor and other groups such as the Chancellor's Cabinet as to the direction we are taking in regards to the development of a strategic plan.
