Retreat Update
Carole Kubota will send out a summary of the results she received from faculty regarding their highest rated items of interest from the retreat.
UWB, UWS, UWT-Three Campus Complementarity
The Tri Campus Council met October 29, 2001, to begin discussion of the Council's primary charge for the academic year: defining 'campus' as opposed to 'school' or 'college.' The Council asked each of the campuses to provide input on how the three-campus complementarity is viewed. Kelvin Sung felt that we are still trying to define ourselves. We need to determine whether we are still serving the purpose for which we set up this campus; if so, we are completing our mission. Ray Lou suggested that we may wish to consider a common core curriculum for all students at Bothell. Vice Chancellor Lou also spoke of serving time-bound/place-bound students and the obligation to serve the needs of that constituency. Professor Kubota suggested that 'tri-campus complementarity' be a topic of conversation at a General Faculty Organization meeting. As a campus, we need to have a clearer idea of how UW Tacoma, UW Bothell, and UW Seattle are alike and how they are different. Kevin Laverty said student experiences might be different on the various campuses even though the course titles might look the same, for example in the Business Program.
New Program Planning
Dan Jacoby reported that there will be some new programs coming to us. The Higher Education Coordinating Board needs list of proposals for 2003.
Policy on Competitive Offers and Related Concerns
Pete Nye expressed concern about the process involved in dealing with competitive offers for faculty. Among the concerns registered were (a) what responses are available when competitive offers are made (b) whether offers can be matched when programs do not have a competitive offer policy (c) when searches may be waived, and (d) what level of faculty deliberation is required by the faculty code when a new hire is made without a search. It is not clear what procedures the various departments have in place for competitive offers. It was decided to table this issue until the November 28 meeting.
Computing and Software Systems Self-Sustaining Degree Programs
Professor Sung gave a brief summary of what happened two years ago regarding the self-sustaining degree program in Computing and Software Systems. A packet of material from Chuck Jackels, Director of the CSS Program, was distributed which outlined the present situation regarding this degree program. The department recently voted to explore possible distance learning programs, but not any particular one. Professor Jackels will be invited to a future meeting to give an update on the future of the self-sustaining degree program.
