Summer 2008 Special Topics/Current Issues Course Descriptions

B EDUC 520 A - Current Issues in Multicultural Education: Culture and Gatekeeping and Learning Morale in Educational Settings (3 cr)

SLN 10238

Frederick Erickson, Professor, Social Research Methodology, UCLA

M/T/W/TH/F, July 7-July 18, 1:10-4:30 (UW Seattle, Miller Hall)

Sponsored by the UW Seattle Center for Multicultural Education and the University of Washington Bothell. "Culture" has been conceived of in differing ways. In schools various aspects of culture influence both the provision of instruction and the reactions of students to that instruction. Cultural judgments by educators can function for "educational gatekeeping," as a means of judging and sorting students in ways that do not benefit them educationally; or cultural judgments can inform "learning morale building," as a means of making learning environments maximally welcoming to and supportive of students. Relations between culture, gatekeeping, and learning morale in educational settings will be explored in the seminar through readings, lecture/discussion, and review of video examples. As a final exercise students will write a short reflective paper on major topics of the course.

B EDUC 591 A - Special Topics in Education: Telling our Stories as Teachers (5 cr)

SLN 10242

Jane Van Galen, Professor, UW Bothell Education Program

A Term, July 21- August 1, M/W/F, 10:00 am -4:00 pm

Teachers are too rarely asked to tell their stories, too rarely invited to represent the depths of their work in creative ways. In this course, students will use simple multi-media tools to weave the voices, the images, and the energy of their classroom to create digital stories of teaching. Through writing exercises, peer collaboration, and exploration of the creative potential of digital media tools, students will discover new things about themselves as a teacher within a reflective community of storytellers.

B EDUC 591 B - Special Topics in Education: Perspectives on Curriculum Integration (3 cr)

SLN 10243

Jean Eisele, Senior Lecturer, UW Bothell Education Program

A Term, June 30- July17, T/W/TH, 1:30-4:30 pm

Conceptually, children learn best through activities that connect new knowledge to their experience by crossing disciplines. With the growth of available knowledge and with limited schedules that must continually absorb new mandates, teachers seek ways to connect curriculum areas. The focus of this class will be on various means of developing integrative curriculum. The purpose is to become familiar with existing methods of integrating curriculum and, by expanding the understanding of integration, to develop new methods. Approaches to integration within a single subject and between subjects will be developed into usable plans.
