Using the Blackboard Syllabus Builder
- The Syllabus Name is retained from the previous step, but you may replace it with a new one if you wish.
- You can change the section titles of your syllabus to better reflect your course information at the Heading textboxes.
- Fill out the Body textboxes with relevant syllabus information.
Note: pressing enter on the keyboard will not create a new line in the final result. Instead, you must type <br> (HTML for line break) in the textbox where you want to begin on a new line.
- Pick out the design of your syllabus or use the default one.
- Choose if you want to create lesson shells. Lesson shells are a way to divide a syllabus into smaller sections. For instance, they can be used to create a class schedule based on how many days of class there are or how many chapters you cover. To use this option, select Create specified number of lesson shells and enter how many divisions should be created at Number of lessons to create. To opt out of creating lesson shells, select Do not create lesson shells.
- Select Yes for Make the Syllabus available to let students view this syllabus, or No to prevent them from seeing it. You may wish to select No if you are preparing a syllabus in advance and do not want your students to see it just yet.
- Select Yes for Track number of views to have the Blackboard system collect data from your students about usage, otherwise, leave it as No.
- Choose date and time restrictions makes a syllabus appear on the Blackboard course page during a specified time period. Simply check the box(s) which you wish to apply and set their date and time.
Note: You still have to select Yes for Make the content available if you wish to use this feature.
Lesson Shells
- If you have already created lesson shells, click on the Modify button for each one to set them up.
- If you want to add lesson shells, click on the +Lesson button.
- If you want to remove lessons shells, check the box next to the one(s) you want to delete and click on the Remove Lesson button.
- If you are done or do not want lesson shells on your syllabus, click OK to finish adding your syllabus.
Add or Modify Lesson Shells
When you create a new lesson shell or modify your existing ones:
- Change the Lesson Title to something descriptive like a class date or a chapter number.
- You may also set a Lesson Date and Time by picking the dates and times from the drop down boxes and unchecking the boxes for Lesson has no date and Lesson has no times.
- Type out the Lesson Description in the text box. This can include assignments that are due, the date and time of class meetings, what reading material will be covered, or other such topics.
Note: pressing enter on the keyboard will not create a new line in the final result. Instead, you must type
(HTML for line break) in the textbox where you want to begin on a new line. You can also copy and paste text from Microsoft Word to Blackboard.
- Repeat this process until you are done with your schedule/lesson shells.
- This is what students will see on the course page:
