How do we engage with cultural studies?

How do we use cultural studies theory to engage with the world around us?

Below, we provide some examples of cultural studies in action – these examples and resources are grouped into broad categories, but as you’ll see, many sites and organizations can and do span multiple categories. This list is by no means comprehensive and we welcome your additions! Please email Kate Osmond with suggested organizations, sites, people, etc.

Black Girl Dangerous
Blog devoted to the experiences of queer people of color.

Blog run by sex workers to resist the stereotypes and ideas around sex workers in the public.

An online community for young women organizing, blogging, and kicking ass.

Sexuality and Society
Sexuality & Society explores relationships between social institutions, cultural practices, sexual health, and sexual policy.

Blog about the intersection of race and pop culture.

Settler Colonial studies
This blog follows scholarly developments that contribute to a greater awareness Settler Colonial Studies within the disciplines of history, law, genocide studies, indigenous, colonial and postcolonial studies, historical geography, economics, politics, sociology, international relations, political science, cultural and gender studies, philosophy – and everything in between.

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project
Organization that works to guarantee that all people are free to self-determine gender identity and expression, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination or violence.

Southern Poverty Law Center
Organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.  

American Civil Liberties Union
Organization working to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States.

El Centro de la Raza
A voice and a hub for Seattle and Martin Luther King, Jr. County’s Latino community advocating on behalf of our people and work to achieve social justice.

United Indians of all tribes Foundation
United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF) was founded to serve as a focal point for the renewal and regeneration of Native Americans in the Greater Seattle area and beyond.

The Audre Lorde Project
A Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two Spirit, Trans and Gender Non Conforming People of Color center for community organizing, focusing on the New York City area.

Pongo Teen Writing
A volunteer, nonprofit organization helping Seattle teens who are in jail, on the streets, or in other ways leading difficult lives express themselves through poetry and other forms of writing.
