Our Mission

UWB CSS: A Program for Opportunity

The UWB CSS Program's mission is to address the following four fundamental needs:

Societal Needs: We believe that computing is an increasingly essential element across all aspects of society and is an important engine for economic and social change. CSS educates computing professionals and extends computing knowledge through excellence in learning inside and outside of the classroom, a broad curriculum that incorporates the current state of the art, and research and scholarship that addresses current and future needs of society in general and Washington state in particular.

Student Needs: We believe that broad access to a computing education is a matter of social justice. As part of the most diverse campus in Washington State with the highest percentage of first-generation college attendees, CSS is committed to identifying, admitting, and supporting students who are capable of success in a variety of roles in our profession. We intend this as an explicit pathway for upward mobility to change people’s lives.

Computing Professional Needs: We believe that a faculty who are knowledgeable about and contribute to the state of the art in the profession is essential in meeting the needs of society and of our students. CSS offers an intellectually vigorous academic environment, providing a range of resources that support and promote outstanding scholarship.

UW Bothell Campus Needs: We believe that because it incorporates elements of science, engineering, math, management and communication/teamwork, CSS can play a unique and important role in the university's academic mission. CSS is an integral, distinctive part of UWB and its School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, with a growing brand identity that enhances the campus and school.
