Student Computer Accounts
UW NetID
The UW NetID is a logon account which stands for University of Washington Network Identification; it provides access to the following:
- UWB Computer Lab and Computer Classrooms
- The UWB Wireless Network, which is available on all floors of the UW Bothell buildings: UW1, UW2, LB1, LB2, and LBA.
- The MyUW page where you can check your personal UW information including student grades and schedules: http://myuw.washington.edu/
- A UW email account with forwarding options, which can be accessed at https://webpine.washington.edu/mail/session/
- Other computer services on the Seattle Campus: dial-in modems, lab access, research computing, and web publishing. For additional details, see: http://www.washington.edu/computing/uwnetid/services/
Creating your username
You are allowed to choose your UW NetID using a web form found at: https://uwnetid.washington.edu/newid/
You will need your student number and your Private Access Code (PAC).
Keep the following points in mind when you create your UW NetID:
- UW NetIDs must be 1-8 characters long.
- Use only lowercase letters and numbers. The first character must be a lowercase letter.
- Once you choose a UW NetID, you cannot reset it.
- You may wish to choose a gender-neutral UW NetID to avoid possible harassing email.
- If you choose to use just your first name, and it is a common one, you could receive email meant for other people.
- A common method of selecting a UW NetID is to use initials and all or part of your last name.
- With over sixty thousand UW NetIDs on campus, you may not get your first choice, but the online system will help you select one.
Creating your password
Unfortunately, computer hackers have developed methods for cracking simple passwords. For this reason, the new password you enter is checked by C&C. If it is not complex enough, you are immediately asked to think of another one. You are also encouraged to change your password on a frequent basis. You may receive an email reminder from C&C if you have not changed your password in the last three months.
Your password must meet the following criteria:
- The password must have at least five characters.
- The password must not appear in any dictionary.
- The password must contain both lowercase and uppercase alphabetic characters.
- The password should contain non-alphanumeric characters such as: !, @, #, $, %, ^, &, *
Tips for creating acceptable passwords:
- Multiple word passwords - Try joining several words together with punctuation marks and numbers, and some characters in upper case. (YoU&mE!, p0P*bAnG)
- Pet names and other corny nicknames - Often we name things with off-the-wall, non-dictionary words. Throw in symbols and numbers, and vary the case. (aRfy=d0G, PhId0-k9, b0Pse&am)
- Acronyms of quotations important to you - "Neither a borrower nor a lender be" becomes NaBnaLb!
- The first characters of the middle names of the members of your family, in order by age, with pets represented by &s and *s. (T&sRkcBB*)
Resetting a forgotten password or Changing a password:
If you have forgotten your password, you can use the express stations located in Computer Lab UW1-102 and LB1 Information Commons, or select a new password on the Student Password Renewal Web page. You will need to enter your Student Number (the number on your Husky Card) and Private Access Code (PAC): https://uwnetid.washington.edu/renew/. If you do not know your PAC, and have entered your three security questions, then you will have the option of using the security questions instead of the PAC to verify your identity.
Logging onto computers in Computer Lab UW1-102 and UWB Computer Classrooms
You must have a UW NetID to use the Computer Lab UW1-102 and the computer classrooms.
Logging On:

Logging off:
Logging off is necessary each time you finish using a computer in the computer lab and computer classrooms. You will be held responsible for any damage to the system under your logon.
- Close all open applications.
- Press and hold the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys, all at the same time.
- Click the Log off button, then click OK when it appears.
UW Email Account
When you setup your UW NetID, a UW email account is automatically created.
Accessing your email
- If you want to access your email from many different computers, try using WebPine, which can be found at: http://webpine.washington.edu
- If you have a lot of email and attachments, you probably want to use a desktop email program such as MS Outlook Express, Mozilla Mail, or PC-Pine. For more information refer to: http://www.washington.edu/computing/email/
- To access your email in the labs, double click the SSH Telnet icon on the desktop to establish a connection, then enter your UW NetID and password.
Blackboard
Blackboard is Web courseware used by UWB faculty. With Blackboard, faculty have an opportunity to add online components to a course: links, course content, online discussions to assessment, small groups, and chat. Blackboard can also be used for distance learning courses. Faculty and students can easily access Blackboard from any location, whether from home, on campus, or other locations.
Creating an account and enrolling in a course
- Go to Blackboard: http://bb.bothell.washington.edu
- Click the Create Account button.
- Fill in the information with the red asterisk. We recommend that your user ID be the same as your UWB computer logon. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the page and then click OK.
- Click the Courses tab. To find your course, type the course ID in the Course Search box. Scroll down the page to get to the title of your course. You can also browse for your course under the Bothell link in the Course Catalog area.
- Click the Enroll button on the right side of your course. Click the Submit button at the bottom of the screen and then click OK.
Resetting a forgotten password
Students and instructors can retrieve a lost password by clicking on the "Forgot your password?" link at the Blackboard login screen. An email is then sent to you that allows you to create a new password.
