How Spam Flagging and Filtering Work

1. An e-mail comes into the UWB network addressed to bothell.washington.edu or uwb.edu accounts from an outside source.

2. The e-mail server runs the message through SpamAssassin tests for spam characteristics.

3. SpamAssassin rule base is used to review contents of the e-mail message; words or phrases that are known to be spam-like are flagged with **SPAM?** in the subject line.

4. If the recipient's e-mail account has an active Outlook spam filter, the message will be filtered into the Junk Mail folder.

5. If the recipient's e-mail account does not have a spam filter in place, the mail will appear in the recipient's inbox.
