Installing VirusScan 8.0i on your Home PC (Windows XP or 2000)
The University of Washington provides a site license for VirusScan which
grants the students, faculty, and staff the right to use the software
on University-owned computers and on their personal computers. This
software has been installed by Information Systems on your work
computer. We strongly encourage you to install and update it regularly
it at home as well. VirusScan 8.0i is the current version for Windows
XP and 2000.
Preparations
First, print out a copy of these instructions.
Next, uninstall any virus protection software currently on your computer.
- In the Start menu, go to Settings, then Control Panel.
- Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
- Scroll through the software list to find your old virus protection software.
- Click to highlight it, then click on Add/Remove.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Finally, close all open applications except for your web browser.
Download the software
Get the software from the UW Computing & Communications web page:
- At the VirusScan Software Terms and Conditions web page, click on the blue I Agree button after you have read the page.
- At
the UW NetID login page, enter your UW NetID and Password. (This is the
same ID and Password that you use to get into MyUW, Homer, or Dante).
- Click on VS 8.0 for Windows 2000/XP.
- Next scroll down and click on Download VS 8.0i.
- Make
sure your computer is connected to the Internet. If you can not be
connected to the Internet during the installation process, you should
download the nightly update and install this package after completing the installation of VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.
- In the "File Download Security Warning" window, click Save.
- In the "Save As" window, click on the down arrow next to the Save in: box at the top of the window, then scroll up to the top of the list until you find Desktop. Click Desktop, then click Save.
- Wait while the file is downloaded. This will take a few minutes.
- When it's done, close your browser.
Install the software
- Find the file on your desktop called vs8.exe, and double-click it.
- Click Next in the "McAffee Setup" window.
- In the Licensing Window, select "I accept the terms...", then click OK.
- You
may get a "Previous Version Detected" window, if so click next. What
this means is that this installation of VirusScan 8 will remove any
older versions of VirusScan.
- In the "Select Setup Type" window, leave Typical selected and click Next.
- In the "Ready to Install" window, click Install.
- After it has installed, ensure Update Now and Run On-Demand Scan are checked.
- Click Finish. The installer will update the DAT files through UW and do a scan.
Turn on/configure AutoUpdate
New
viruses are being produced constantly, so it is extremely important
that you regularly update your virus protection software. It is
recommended that you schedule a daily auto update so that you will not
have to worry about checking for updates manually.
- Right click on the VirusScan shield icon, located on the lower-right corner of your screen.

- Choose VirusScan Console... This will open the console window.
- Double-click on AutoUpdate.
- Click on the Schedule... button.
- Click on the "Schedule" tab.
- Set the schedule that will best suit your computer.
- When you are done, click OK.
- Then click Apply.
- Click OK.
- Close the VirusScan Console.
