12/02/2016 On November 15, 2016, I informed you about an incident that allegedly occurred on our campus. The information we received stated that several Muslim women students were walking on campus when they were approached by several men who then demanded that the women remove their hijabs. As I said then and reiterate now, "This type of behavior is abhorrent and will not be tolerated at UW Bothell. This is not only a violation of the women’s right to practice their faith, it is also a clear violation of our values at UW Bothell. In addition, such an act may be potentially a criminal assault, and a hate crime. This is a serious offense.” We are obligated to follow up on these types of allegations. I asked our Campus Safety Director, Cham Kao, to investigate these serious allegations immediately. In the past two weeks, Cham has independently and also in partnership with the Bothell Police Department worked to follow up on the allegations. To date, he has not been able to verify the incident. Investigators have been unable to locate victim(s), suspect(s), witnesses, or any corroborating information regarding this possible incident on our campus. If anyone has any information on this investigation, please call Campus Safety at 425-352-5359 or the City of Bothell Police Department at 425.486.1254 We encourage everyone to take advantage of the University resources linked below: Care Team Safe Campus Bothell Police Department uwbalert Cascadia Alert Please contact the Campus Safety Department at 425-352-5359 for additional crime prevention information, and call 911 for emergencies (for non-emergencies 425.486.1254).
