Congratulations to Sara Nausner for being the first UW Bothell Students in Service member to complete a 900 hour term of service. Sara actually logged an incredible 966 volunteer hours in just over one year! She worked hard for the Campus Events Board, the UW Bothell Elections Committee, as a recruiter and promoter for the Center for Student Entrepreneurship, on a wide variety of projects for the Circle K Club, and most recently with the Associated Students of the University of Washington Bothell. Thanks for your service Sara, and for showing us all how it can be done!
One of Nyla's many service sites is Juanita High School, where she will be tutoring English Language Learners, facilitating classroom activities, and assisting instructors to help improve the English reading and writing skills of these high school students. Why does Nyla commit to service learning? In her words: "Serving my community is something that gives me great pleasure. I feel that by being in college, I have more opportunities presented to me to do something beneficial outside of my immediate surroundings. Now is the perfect time for me to explore how far I can dive in all aspects of my life—educationally and personally."
Ashley is one of the UW Bothell's inspiring new group of freshmen. She is a big fan of experiential learning, and with the ultimate goal of becoming a teacher, has immersed herself in work in local grade school classrooms. She volunteers in a first grade classroom at Maywood Hills Elementary and she is involved in this year's Space Huskies project where her ability to speak Russian is making it possible for one young student to participate more meaningfully in classroom activities. She has made a 450 hour commitment to Students in Service. Welcome Ashley!
Larisa is so enthusiastic about our Students in Service program that as soon as she finished her first 300 hour term of service she signed up for a second one—the next day! Larisa continues to mentor students and to act as a contact point between students and the Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences Graduate Programs. And she remains dedicated to her service work at the Eastside Domestic Violence program. Larisa is looking forward to graduating with a degree in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences—Community Psychology in the spring of 2009, with two minors: one in Human Rights, and another in Education.
Deborah is deeply involved in ecological restoration and is part of the UW Bothell Restoration Ecology Network. She is also our first volunteer to take on a 450 hour committment! Her time this year will be split between hands-on fieldwork and administrative hours dedicated to planning and research. Her overall goal is "to gain time and knowledge working in the field of ecological restoration."
Marcela is a charter member of the UW Bothell Circle K Club in which she serves as Marketing and Promotions Chair. Part of her many undertakings this year will be to create a web presence for this vibrant, service-oriented group of students. Marcela will also keep busy helping out with the many volunteer projects the club takes part in each year, as well as act as an event coordinator, collaborating with the University of Washington Bothell, the Northshore Kiwanis Club, and the surrounding communities served by both of these entities.
