Students in Service is an AmeriCorps program administered in our region by the Washington Campus Compact. And while the program is in its relative infancy at UW Bothell, it is fast becoming a vital part of our campus culture. Student volunteers working in the areas of human needs or services, education, environmental initiatives, homeland security and public safety are eligible to receive education grants based on various lengths of service. Work-study jobs that provide direct service to the community are also eligible for these grants.
Educational grants are based on hours served:
300 hours = $1000 educational award
450 hours = $1250 educational award
900 hours (over two years) = $2362.50 educational award
Each year UW Bothell is allotted a fixed number of volunteer slots, which are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Students interested in enrolling in the SIS program at UW Bothell begin with an online pre-service orientation. To check on our slot availability, to complete the enrollment paperwork, or for more information, contact the Teaching and Learning Center.
The Students in Service program at UW Bothell places equal emphasis on service and learning. Volunteers working in the program here are asked to attend two meetings a quarter on campus where open discussion and group exercises engender reflection and the creation of new knowledge. The SIS program also encourages personal development by allotting a significant percentage of total volunteer hours to these activities. Additionally, students are given the opportunity to reflect more formally by submitting Great Stories of their volunteer experiences to the SIS website.
