Completing a Self-placement
Self-placements can be used to meet the Community- Based Learning and Research requirement for your course IF you have a pre-existing volunteer relationship with an organization, AND the nature of your service work aligns with the learning goals of your course. Students who plan to complete a community-based learning and research self-placement must complete a Self-Placement Form.
SELF-PLACEMENT FORMS ARE DUE ACCORDING TO FACULTY INSTRUCTION. To submit one, please follow these steps:
Review and follow this criteria, to ensure your current volunteer work is a good fit for self-placed community-based learning:
Secure your instructor’s permission to move forward
Have a conversation with your course instructor about the position you want to use for a self-placement, briefly sharing the nature of the organization, your volunteer activities and how they relate to the class. Conversations may take place after class, during office hours or via email.
COMPLETE A SELF-PLACEMENT FORM
Once your instructor has given you the go-ahead, you must complete a self-placement form in order to formalize the arrangement. Make sure to review, and follow, the criteria outlined above.
Further instructions on completing self-placement
When you complete your self-placement form, your instructor will be notified via email and they will have the opportunity to accept or decline with feedback. If they accept your form, it will move on to be double-approved by the Office of Community-Based Learning and Research, based on the criteria above. Once that successfully happens, you will receive an email indicating that your position has been confirmed. If your instructor does not approve your form, you will receive comments indicating the reasoning and/or next steps. If you do not hear back in a timely manner, check in with your instructor about the status of your form first, and then follow up with the Office of Community-Based Learning and Research if more information is needed.
Communicate with your organization
Once you receive the confirmation email, it’s important to communicate with the organization and your site supervisor about the nature of your now community-based learning role (i.e. that you’re integrating your volunteer work with the organization with academic course-based learning) — and that they should expect to hear from the Office of Community-Based Learning and Research towards the end of the quarter to complete a student evaluation form.
