The scholarships and fellowships featured below are prestigious national awards that require nomination from the University of Washington in order to be considered a candidate. The following scholarships and fellowships include an international or study abroad component.
Boren Undergraduate Scholarships
The Boren Scholarships offer a unique opportunity for U.S. undergraduates to study abroad who will pursue the study of languages and cultures currently underrepresented in study abroad and critical to U.S. national security. Students interested in applying must find and propose a study abroad program or direct enrollment opportunity they plan to do.
Boren awards scholarships for study of world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded).
An award of up to $20,000 will be granted for a full academic year of study abroad. The University of Washington campus deadline is in January.
Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship
The Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarships program is a national award that provides full support and travel allowance to students wanting to study engineering, mathematics, or natural science at Churchill College, Cambridge University, England.
Applicants for a Churchill Scholarship must be citizens of the United States and must be a senior who is enrolled in one of the institutions participating in the Scholarship Program competition or a student who has recently graduated from one of those institutions.
Candidates must be nominated by the University of Washington to compete for the Churchill Scholarship. The campus deadline is in April.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program
Each year the Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards generous grants to over 1,500 individuals who demonstrate preparation for independent study and/or research and English Teaching Assistantships. The program is designed to give students, artists, and other qualified professionals the opportunity to live abroad in one of over 150 countries.
Grant benefits include round-trip airfare, monthly stipend and health insurance for the length of your stay abroad (8-10 months). Additional benefits may also include dependent support, research allowance, tuition, language lessons and enhancement activities.
Applicants must obtain a Bachelor’s degree before the grant period begins and the award is open to current graduate students, graduating seniors and recent graduates from all fields. The University of Washington campus deadline is in September.
Luce Scholars Program
The Luce Scholars Program represents a major effort by the Henry Luce Foundation to raise an awareness of Asia among potential leaders in American society by providing stipends, language training and individualized professional placement in Asia for 15 to 18 seniors and graduate students each year.
The Luce Scholars Program is unique among American-Asian exchanges in that it is intended for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia.
The University of Washington campus deadline is in October.
Marshall Scholarship
The Marshall Scholarships are tenable at any British university and cover two years of study in any discipline, at the graduate level, leading towards the receipt of a British university degree.
Applicants should be U.S. citizens, obtain a first degree by the time student takes up scholarship, and normally have a GPA in excess of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale after the student's freshman year.
Up to 40 scholars are selected each year to study at institutions in the United Kingdom. The University of Washington campus deadline is in April.
George J. Mitchell Scholarship
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship provides one academic year of study at institutions of higher learning in Ireland, including the seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and the two universities in Northern Ireland. They include: Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin, NUI Galway, University College Maynooth, University of Limerick, Dublin City University, Queen’s University Belfast, and The University of Ulster.
Prospective Scholars must have a demonstrated record of intellectual distinction, leadership, and extra-curricular activity, as well as personal characteristics of honesty, integrity, fairness, and unselfish service to others which indicate a potential for future leadership and contribution to society.
Students must be nominated by the University of Washington in order to compete for this award. The campus deadline is in April.
Rhodes Scholarship for American Students
The Rhodes Scholarship attempts to select individuals with proven intellectual and academic achievement of a high standard as well as integrity of character, interest in and respect for their fellow beings, the ability to lead and the energy to use their talents to the full.
Rhodes Scholars receive assistance with tuition and other necessary expenses, including vacations, for one to three years of study at Oxford University in England.
Thirty-two American citizens are named Rhodes Scholars each year. Applicants must be between 18 and 24 years of age.
The University of Washington holds a nomination competition to determine Rhodes Scholar nominees. The campus deadline is in April.
