Are you a highly-motivated and independent researcher seeking the opportunity to live abroad for an academic year? Each year the U.S. government’s prestigious U.S. Fulbright Program awards generous grants to over 1,500 students who demonstrate strong academic and/or professional preparation for individual study or research and English Teaching Assistantships. The University of Washington Bothell encourages all graduate students, graduating seniors and recent graduates from all disciplines who are interested in foreign study to consider applying for a Fulbright grant.
What are the benefits of a Fulbright grant?
Grant benefits include round-trip airfare, monthly stipend (for room, board, incidental costs) and health insurance for the length of your stay abroad (8-10 months).
Additional benefits may also include dependent support, research allowance, tuition, language lessons and enhancement activities, but varies widely depending on your host country.
Who is eligible to apply for the Fulbright grants?
U.S. citizens in good health (international students may contact their own country’s Fulbright Commission to determine if they are eligible to apply within their home country).
A Fulbright applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training or professional experience before the grant period begins.
An individual must meet sufficient language requirements as determined by the host country.
Please note: Previous U.S. Student Fulbright grantees and those who have already earned a PhD are NOT eligible to apply for the Fulbright Program.
Where can I study with a Fulbright grant?
Fulbright research grants and English Teaching Assistantships are awarded for intercultural research/study in over 150 countries.
Applicants may only apply to one country per application cycle and are strongly encouraged to explore the Country Summaries section on the Fulbright website in order to learn more about the requirements for each specific region/country.
How do I appy for the Fulbright program?
All currently enrolled UW Bothell students are required to apply through the University of Washington. Recent graduates have the option to apply through the UW campus process or directly to the Institute of International Education (IIE) as an At-large applicant.
The entire Fulbright application process is online and can be accessed beginning May 1. Once the online application is complete, a hard copy must be printed and submitted to the UW campus in Seattle by the September 14, 2011 deadline.
Every applicant will be required to participate in a UW campus interview in Seattle on Saturday, October 1, 2011. You must be available on this day.
