05/11/2017 Math Peer Facilitator UW Bothell The First Year and Pre-major Program is starting a math peer facilitator program. Beginning in Fall 2017, students enrolled in BMATH 123 (Precalculus II) will be also take BMATH 127, a Math Peer-Facilitator led discussion session. Each discussion section will contain a maximum of 15 students, where the peer facilitator will: Lead activities that review core math skills so that students will be more successful in precalculus and calculus. Lead discussions about how to do well in college and share experiences and resources at UWB. Help students connect with their peers, their instructors and the campus community. Educate students about the process of applying to STEM and business majors. Hold weekly office hours, attend a weekly meeting and lead review sessions. Who Should Apply? Any business or STEM major should consider applying if they love math and want to help first-year students to be successful at UW Bothell. Peer Facilitator Responsibilities Lead two BMATH 127 lab sections. (3 hours per week) Hold advising and tutoring office hours. (1 hour/week) Attend weekly team meetings. (1 hour/week) Hold review sessions near exam dates. (About 8 hours/quarter) Required Qualifications Current STEM or Business major Have a minimum of a 3.00 Cumulative GPA Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 in college math courses Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff Capacity for discretion, diplomacy, and confidentiality Resourceful, reliable, flexible, highly motivated and independent Preferred Qualifications Experience facilitating workshops or delivering group presentations Time Commitments Attendance at training one week prior to start of Autumn quarter. Able to work at least 3 hours per week during Autumn quarter. Hours and Compensation $15.00 an hour while employed An average of 5 hours per week, flexible with a student’s schedule 4 review sessions per quarter. Additional hours for grading may be available Period of Appointment: Autumn 2017. May be extended to Winter and/or Spring 2018 Supervision and Training Ongoing training and supervision will be primarily provided by Kathy Mitchell and Emily Gismervig with assistance from other faculty teaching B MATH 123.
