UW Bothell Kick-Started My Career In...

HR Communications Specialist, PACCAR Inc

In 2007 when I started my freshman year at UW Bothell, I would never have been able to tell you where I would be 4 years later. Now, in 2012, I can say that I not only have a job that I love, but one where I also utilize many of the skills that I learned in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences program, as well as through my student jobs at UW Bothell. While I was a student, I worked as the first freshman writing consultant at the UW Bothell Writing Center. While I was there, I continued to develop my passion for writing and editing. From there, I continued on to excel at a new position in the Office of Advancement and External Relations. As a student working in Advancement, I had many opportunities to learn from some of the best in the business. I learned how to write press releases, create witty and thought-provoking narrative and how to manage strategic communications. From both this position and my position at the Writing Center, I went on to get a job right out of college.

In 2010, I was hired as an Advancement Services Officer in Regional Advancement at the University of Washington Seattle, where I supported three major gift officers who traveled around the nation to meet with friends and donors of the UW. Although I enjoyed working for the UW and spreading the good message of my alma mater, I found myself missing my first passion, writing. To fuel this missing link, while I continued to work at UW, I started my own freelance Public Relations company. I worked with several small businesses in the Puget Sound Area, focusing on their social media strategies, as well as their print and online publications.

Despite the enjoyment and fulfillment I received from my freelance work, I found myself applying and being offered, the position of Human Resources Communications Specialist at PACCAR Inc in Bellevue, Wash.  My duties include editing and writing for their company magazine, PACCAR World, helping with their social media strategy for recruiting and working on other company communications. My role at PACCAR is one that I never thought I would achieve, but it is because of the good work I did through the UW Bothell Writing Center and the Office of Advancement, that PACCAR was so impressed with my portfolio of work. Did I think I would be here 4 years later? No, but do I know why I am? Yes, it’s all due to the quality education and mentorship opportunities that I received at UW Bothell.
