Certificate overview

Business professionals help companies meet objectives quickly, reliably and at low cost. Evidence highlights strong industry demand for trained professionals in managing business operations. A Certificate in Operations Management is especially well-suited for business professionals expanding their careers in the fields of information technology, engineering, software, services, retail, transportation and manufacturing sectors. This unique Certificate program trains entry level and advanced business professionals to contribute to their company with an integrated project that incorporates areas of business process analytics and improvement, project management, cost and risk management and management control systems.

Learning objectives

On completion of the Certificate in Operations Management, students shall be able to:
  • Plan, monitor and manage multi-functional projects. 
  • Model, evaluate and optimize business processes.  
  • Assess strategies of business process improvement and reengineering. 
  • Articulate and apply methods for managing supply chains. 
  • Apply costs and other information for decision making and risk management.

Bring a project to the program

Participants will be asked to work with their organizations to propose business process improvement projects. Faculty will evaluate and select projects and secure organizational stakeholder engagement for those proposed projects and assign participant teams to practice course concepts and tools in order to advance recommendations to the organization. The organizational stakeholders, educators and Muckleshoot Tribal College coordinators will be invited to the final presentations and graduation ceremony on August 25, 2018.

The Certificate program is structured to be engaging, meaningful and impactful for participants in their professional careers, the Muckleshoot tribe and its organizations and the UW Bothell faculty.

Business professionals at all levels that want to expand their skill set in process improvement, project management, supply chain knowledge, cost and risk management, communications

Cost

The cost of tuition is dependent on enrollment and confirmed on June 10.

15-19 participants: $8,700

20-25 participants: $7,000

26-36 participants: $6,500

37-42 participants: $6,000

Payment information will be sent to you in the confirmation email and is due by Friday, June 15, one week prior to the start of the program.

All costs will be paid for eligible Muckleshoot Tribal members. All others should email program managers for more information.

Certificate program curriculum

Module 1: Introduction to Operations and Supply Chain Management

Covers the fundamentals of operations management and business processes. It will provide a high level perspective of the functional areas of the business as well as the how business processes are used to deliver the services and products of the organization.

Module 2: Business Processes: Identification, Mapping, and Evaluation

Introduces and demonstrates process identification and process mapping. The module will culminate in the identification of a real-world process in the participants’ organizations with improvement potential.

Module 3: Project Management

Practices project selection, stakeholder analysis, communication plans, scheduling, monitoring and post-project assessment. The content will be applied to the select and prepare a project around an identified process from the previous module.

Module 4: Business Process Improvement I: Business Theories

Discusses the theories of business process improvement such as lean, quality and decision making. The presentation of real-world examples and cases where the theories have been applied will be discussed.

Module 5: Business Process Improvement II: Analysis Tools and Methods

Presents data collection and different analysis tools such as spreadsheet modeling, data analysis and data mining. The lessons learned from this module will be applied to the process improvement project.

Module 6: Project Cost and Risk Management

Focuses on the cost of process improvement projects and the management of project risk. Decision making based on spreadsheet analysis will be demonstrated. These topics inform and improve managerial decision making about projects.

Module 7: Project Review and Control

Demonstrates assessment of project success and process control. Topics may include analytical tools and statistical process control methods to ensure that processes achieve expected levels of quality, cost and time.

Module 8 Capstone: Business Project, Presentation and Stakeholder Communication

The culminating business process improvement projects will be presented to project stakeholders from participants’ organizations. The project is an opportunity to practice communicating project insights and recommendations.
