Lecture Series - Entrepreneurship

Many would-be entrepreneurs are fascinated by the success, power, money and fame associated with running your own successful businesses like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. Unfortunately, more than 90% of start-ups end in failure leaving the founders disillusioned.

There is no guarantee that a start up will be successful, no matter how much preparation and hard much work you put in. However, understanding the entrepreneurship process, thinking through the big issues, and clarifying your goals up-front can help to improve the odds of success, or allow you to evaluate the possible opportunity cost and identify whether you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

This entrepreneurship lecture series has four modules lasting total of 6- 8 hours in class lecture and interactive discussion allowing participants to ask specific questions.

Module 1: Think, Clarify, and Jump
This module cover the issues such as Entrepreneurship Model, process for starting a new business, clarifying the goals as well as making the critical decision to start a new business.

Module 2: Set the Right Strategy
Setting Strategy requires integrating various ideas, business models, resources and talent together for a blue print. This module will cover business model, why strategy and how to define it, profitability and growth model, risk and risk management, writing a business plan as well how to obtain feedback for your strategy and plan.

Module 3: Execute the Strategy
Business success is 10% Strategy and 90% execution. This holds true for most start-ups. Strong execution relies on tactics, managerial savvy, and discipline. It is more than just showmanship and promotion of ideas. Many great ideas never make it because the execution is not done properly. This module covers key elements of execution, having the right resources and relationship, building organization structure and team as well as the roles and change roles of entrepreneurs over time.

Module 4: Raising Capital and Summary of Entrepreneurship
Cash is king. Cash flow, rather than profit, is the life blood of any start up. This module will provide various fund raising strategies and options, how to pitch to VC to secure funding, and calculating the valuation of start ups. Finally, we will summarize the entire series by looking at Organizational Growth Model and Assessment, success factors for entrepreneurship


Yi Ping (Y.P.) Chan is a principal at Chanden Inc. which focusses on investment and business advisory services primarily in Greater China and the United States. Y.P. has over 20 years of experience in business turnaround and restructuring, entrepreneurship, venture capital, JV and acquisitions in USA, Greater China, Japan and Korea. He has management experience in running companies that range from start-ups to a small public company listed on the American Stock Exchange.

Y.P. obtained both his MBA and MSEE degrees from Columbia University. He was a member of the Young Entrepreneurs’ Organization, serving as a board member of the Hong Kong chapter in 2002 and 2003. He also served as a development advisor and associate for the Global Chinese Business Initiative at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania from 1998 to 2001. He was an Advisory Board Member of The Global Business Center at the University of Washington Foster School of Business in 2011.
