Work is well underway on the long awaited SR 522 off ramp
project that will enable UW Bothell and Cascadia Community College to grow to
serve 10,000 full-time students. The project is on track to finish in the fall
of 2009.
In late August crews placed five 128 foot-long bridge girders using
two 150-ton cranes. Additionally, workers are creating the signature portion of
the project -- a 95-foot-tall retaining wall called a soil nail wall. It will be
the tallest ever constructed by the Washington State Department of
Transportation. To stabilize the wall, crews are drilling more than 1,400 nails
into the side of the hill with each nail ranging in length from 50 to 85 feet.
