The decision to pursue a career in the health takes careful consideration and reflection on your personal interests and motivation.  You will need to be realistic when thinking about your academics and skills in science.  Make sure you assess the demands of the field and have a clear understanding of the training involved so that you can make the most informed decision on whether or not this is the right path for you.  Get involved in a health care setting and see first hand what the field is about and work to understand the population you will be serving.  Also, consult with advisors, career counselors, health professionals, professors, family and others who care about you.

How do you know which health profession to pursue?  Do your research!  Check out these websites to get started:

  • Explore Health Careers: www.explorehealthcareers.org
  • Washington Occupational Information System: www.wois.org (this requires an access code so connect with the pre-health advisor or a career counselor for the code)

As a pre health student, you can major in anything.  The most important thing is that you choose a major that you enjoy and that you can be successful in.  If you are having trouble with major selection, visit UW Bothell's Career Center.
