English Language Proficiency

All applicants for whom English is a non-native language must provide proof of English language proficiency by providing scores that meet the University's minimum on one of the following exams or through one of the alternative options listed below.  This includes international students and domestic students who completed most of primary and secondary education outside the U.S.

Note: Determining the English language proficiency requirement is at the discretion of UW Bothell. Applicants who are required to prove English language proficiency are exempt from the World Languages admission requirement.

*A TOEFL score of 90 or 91 combined with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher is allowed in place of a TOEFL score of 92 (except for applicants applying to Computer Science and Software Systems programs).

UW Bothell’s Institution Code for the TOEFL is 9964.

Test scores are only valid for 2 years.

Alternative Options for the English Language Proficiency Requirement:


NOTE: This option is different for Applied Computing, Computer Science and Software Engineering, and Computer Engineering applicants (see Option #2).

90-Credit Option (must meet all four requirements)*:

  1. Have earned a minimum of a 2.75 cumulative GPA AND 
  2. Have earned a minimum grade of 3.0 in the equivalent of English Composition (UW Engl 131) (Ex: English 101) from a U.S. regionally accredited institution AND 
  3. Have earned a minimum grade of 3.0 in the equivalent of Writing from Research (UW Engl 182) (Ex: English 102) from a U.S. regionally accredited institution AND
  4. Completed 90 transferrable quarter credits (or 60 transferrable semester credits) from a U.S. regionally accredited institution

NOTE: We strongly recommend completion of English Composition (UW Engl 131) and Writing from Research (UW Engl 182) at the time of application.


Completion of the University of Washington Bothell's English Program.  This program is for students who do not meet the English language proficiency requirement for a degree program. However, students must meet English language proficiency admission requirements for the Bothell English Program (see below). This options is only valid for one year after successful completion of the Bothell English Program.

Completion of a minimum of four years of high school English in the United States with grades of 3.0 or higher and either:

a minimum score of 500 on the SAT Critical Reading or Writing
a minimum score of 21 on the ACT (English)


Completion of a bachelor’s degree with at least 90 transferrable quarter credits (or 60 transferrable semester credits) earned at a regionally accredited institution in the U.S.; or completion of a master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S.
