BS Graduation Requirements

Students pursuing the Environmental Science major must complete the following program requirements, in addition to the general graduation requirements of the University, to be eligible for graduation with the Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science:

Select one of the following options within the major:

  1. Conservation and Restoration Ecology (CRE)
  2. Earth System Science (ESS)

Complete 78 credits to include the following:

  1. BIS 300 - Interdisciplinary Inquiry (5 credits). BIS 300 should be taken in the first quarter of enrollment.
  2. BES 301 - Science Methods and Practice (5 credits). Typically offered only Autumn & Winter quarter.
  3. BIS 315 - Understanding Statistics (5 credits)
  4. BES 303 - Environmental Monitoring Practicum (3 credits)
  5. BES 312 - Ecology (5 credits)
  6. BES 3xx - Introduction to GIS or BES 439 Computer Modeling & Visualization in Environmental Science (5 credits) 
  7. Pathway Core Coursework (CRE - 20 credits) (ESS - 15 credits) click on CRE and/or ESS for pathway core details.
  8. Distribution Requirements (CRE - 20 credits) (ESS - 25 credits) click on CRE and/or ESS for distribution requirement details.
  9. BES 462, 463 & 464 Restoration Ecology Capstone (10 credits) with a minimum grade of 2.5 or approved Independent Research (10 credits).

The 78 major credits must be completed in MATRICULATED STATUS.

In addition to the 78 credits within the major, complete 12 credits of general electives.

Areas of Knowledge

Within the above-listed 90 credits, a minimum of ten (10) credits each in Visual, Literary and Performing Arts (VLPA), Individuals and Societies (I&S), and Natural World (NW) to be taken in IAS courses at the 200, 300, or 400 levels. Multiply-designated courses may not be double-counted as fulfilling two Areas of Knowledge.

200-level Coursework

Up to 35 credits of 200-level coursework taken at UWB may be applied toward designated requirements within the 90 program credits. Please contact an IAS adviser for details.
