CSS Computer Labs

The Computing and Software Systems Program is committed to maintaining laboratories that reflect the best that computer science has to offer. Their design reflects our understanding that they are not merely places to house computers --- they also serve as hubs for collaboration, discussion, seminars, and social activities. From a technical point of view, our laboratories offer a diverse mix of platforms and software that go beyond typical desktop computing. We maintain four computer laboratories:

Windows Lab (UW1 310)

Our Windows lab contains 33 3.8GHz Pentium 4 computers running Windows XP (including 4 collaborative software development setups) and two XBox 360 gaming consoles. A full suite of software development software, plus specialized software to support various CSS courses, is available.

Linux Lab (UW1 320)

Our Linux lab has 16 2.8GHz Pentium Core 2 Duo desktop machines (three configured for group work) and a cluster of 16 2.8GHz Pentium Core 2 Duo 1U rack-mounted servers, all running Red Hat Enterprise Linux v5. As with the Windows lab, a wide range of development tools and more specialized software is installed. The Linux lab also has a small refrigerator and microwave.

Embedded Systems and Networking Lab (UW1 321)

The Embedded Systems and Networking Lab contains a variety of Intel workstations running Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Linux. It also contains Hewlett-Packard Logic Analyzers and 68000/ColdFire processor family Emulators, plus a range of networking hardware and isolated in-laboratory networking infrastructure.

Center for Integrated Teaching, Learning and Scholarship (UW1 302)

The Center for Integrated Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (CITLS) supports undergraduate research in four laboratories: the Center for Multimedia Research, the Biocomputing Laboratory, the Distributed Systems Laboratory, and the Scientific Computing Laboratory. It houses a range of specialized equipment, including 3D digital multimedia hardware and software, Myrinet-2000 and Giga Ethernet clusters with a total of 32 processors, and a number of Windows and Linux workstations, all connected to the Center's gigabit network.
